Avatar 2’s release is only a few months away, but production is still underway. Considering how long it’s been in the works, we’re not surprised. It’s been more than a decade since Avatar first appeared and wowed us all with its amazing visuals, and we hope that the sequel lives up to its predecessor.
Producer John Landau keeps us informed of the film’s progress, namely by posting updates on his personal Instagram. Landau recently revealed that work has begun on the score, with composer none other than Simon Franglen, a longtime collaborator of James Cameron. Now that Avatar: The Way of Water has passed this major production milestone, we can get ready to see it in theaters in December.
We’ve rounded up everything there is to know about Avatar 2 here, from who’s who in the cast to everything we know about the plot. James Cameron is back in the director’s chair, and from the first trailer, he’s clearly brought those impressive CGI spectacles for round two. So, to catch the sequel, scroll on and find out everything we have about Pandora’s return.
Avatar: The Way of Water
The long-delayed Avatar 2 will finally hit theaters this December 16, 2022. It is 13 years after Avatar and eight years after the sequel was released in 2014. I hope it will be worth the wait.
Avatar 2 trailer
The first trailer for Avatar 2 originally premiered at CinemaCon and was later publicly revealed with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It was a theatrical exclusive before finally landing online.
Amazingly, the images show stunning scenery both underwater and on land, with CGI bringing the magical navel and Pandora to life. There’s a hint of a threat lurking in the footage: we see the evil RDA (that’s Resource Development Administration) and they’re bound to cause trouble for everyone. Sully and their family are here, but little is revealed about the plot.
Avatar 2 Cast: Returners and Newcomers
Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar 2’s cast consists of new and returning actors alike.
Sam Worthington returns as Jake Sully, a former human soldier turned permanent member of Na’bi. She is joined by Zoe Saldana, who returns as Neytiri. The couple fell in love in the first film. CCH Pounder plays Mo’at, Neytiri’s mother.
Jack and Neytiri will also have children this time. Jamie Flatters is her first born son Netayam, Britten Dalton is her second son Lo’k and Trinity Bliss is her youngest son Tukterre. Jack Champion is Javier “Spider” Socorro, a man born on Pandora who is adopted by Jack and Neytiri.
Sigourney Weaver is also back, and she’s playing none other than Jake and Neytiri’s daughter Kiri. Her previous character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in the first film. His role in the sequel will also involve going underwater, with a behind-the-scenes image showing the actor completely submerged.
Stephen Lang returns as Colonel Miles Quaritch, who was also killed in the first film. He’ll still be a villain… and now he’s Na’vi. This is certainly surprising, considering the character hates blue aliens. “I’m not going to say, ‘No, he’s exactly the same,'” Lang said of his character. “I think he’s an incredibly interesting character and he wouldn’t have come back if [director] Jim Cameron wasn’t also fascinated with him and hell-bent on seeing where he goes. Where does this character take him as a writer? Director? And that’s me.” Where does it lead?” Dress as an actor?
Kate Winslet joins the role of Ronal, a free-diving member of the Metkaina Underwater Clan. “I had to learn to free dive to play that role in Avatar, and it was amazing,” Winslet told The Hollywood Reporter (opens in a new tab). “My longest breath was seven minutes and 14 seconds, crazy, crazy.” A photo of Winslet underwater was also released, with the actress wearing weights around her waist to keep her submerged.
